snap shut

Privacy policy

Effective 15 October 2026

The short version: Snap Shut does not collect, store or share any of your personal data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no servers.

The camera picture and the face tracking are processed on your phone, in memory, and are never sent anywhere. A photo only leaves the app when you choose to share or save it.

Who we are

Snap Shut is made by Chris Armstrong, an independent developer in the United Kingdom. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Chris Armstrong. If you have a question about your privacy, see Contact below.

What Snap Shut collects

Nothing. We do not collect, receive or store any personal information about you, and we cannot see anything you do in the app. Snap Shut does not include any analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting software from us or from anyone else, and the app does not send data to any server.

The camera

Snap Shut uses your phone's front or back camera to show the mirror. iOS asks your permission the first time. The live picture is processed on your device, frame by frame, to draw the mirror and apply the look you choose. Frames are held in memory only while they are on screen. Nothing is recorded or kept unless you take a photo.

You can turn camera access off at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera.

Face tracking for the makeup looks

Some looks add lipstick and blush to your face. To do this, Snap Shut uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to find where your lips and cheeks are in each camera frame. This information:

Snap Shut does not use Face ID data or the TrueDepth camera's depth data.

Photos you take

When you tap the shutter, Snap Shut makes the photo on your device and opens the iOS share sheet. You choose what happens next: save it to Photos, send it in a message, post it, or cancel. Snap Shut does not upload your photos and does not keep a copy. If you choose to save to Photos, iOS may ask permission for Snap Shut to add photos to your library. Snap Shut cannot read or browse your existing photos.

The share card includes the app's name and a link or QR code to this website. It contains no information about you.

Once you share a photo to another app or service, that service's own privacy policy applies to it.

Settings stored on your phone

Snap Shut remembers your choices, such as your finish, last look, and whether sounds and haptics are on. These are stored only on your device. They are removed when you delete the app.

Purchases

If Snap Shut offers an optional upgrade or tip, payments are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your name, card details or Apple Account information. Apple only tells the app whether a purchase is active.

Information Apple may share with us

Apple may give developers anonymous, aggregated statistics about downloads and usage, and crash reports from people who have chosen to share them with app developers in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements. These do not identify you. Apple's handling of this information is covered by Apple's privacy policy.

This website

This website uses no cookies, analytics or tracking, and loads nothing from third parties. Like any web host, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.

Children

Snap Shut is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no personal information, it collects none from children either.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law (UK GDPR and GDPR) you have rights over personal data held about you, including the right to see it and to have it deleted. Because Snap Shut holds no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to provide or delete. You are still welcome to contact us with any question, and you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of Snap Shut changes how it handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top before that version is released. If a change means data would leave your device, the app will tell you and ask first.
